When the church was built in 1819 at a cost of £77000, it was the most expensive in London since St Paul’s.  

It’s an early example of the Greek revival - in the style of a classical greek temple with massive columns and two

 projecting wings supported by statues of handmaidens.

The caryatids were made by Charles Rossi over a period of three years by putting plaster over a cast iron core.

All looked promising enough until the time came to put the ladies in their place.  Try as Rossi might, they were

 too darn tall and he couldn’t get them to fit in.

As all this was taking place in full public gaze, Rossi had to act fast.  He took the drastic yet effective step 

of lopping a good twelve inches out of their midriffs.   Which is why these stomachless ladies somehow

 don’t look quite right...
